KNOW YOUR PULL STATIONS

Considering recent events at the capital in D.C., it’s important to distinguish between fire alarm pull stations and emergency release or response pull stations.

Fire alarm pull stations are mandated to be prominently red in color and strategically positioned within five feet of an exit route.  These manual activation devices serve as a crucial backup in case where other detection devices like smoke or heat detectors may not have been triggered. This enables individuals on premises to engage with the system and alert occupants about a fire emergency. Upon activation, a signal is promptly relayed to the fire alarm control unit (FACU), initiation both audible and visual alerts. Simultaneously, this signal is transmitted to the central station, remote station, or local security office, requesting assistance from emergency responders.

It's worth noting that in situations where access control systems are in place, all locked doors must be programmed to open automatically upon the activation of a general fire alarm signal. Ensure unimpeded egress for occupants. It’s imperative to emphasize that tampering with fire alarm pull stations, or their misuse outside of fire-related incidents may result in penalties enforced by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

On the other hand, blue emergency pull stations find their primary application in environments with access control setups incorporating magnetic locks. These distinct blue pull stations are instrumental in facilitating emergency egress when occupants find themselves unable to leave a secured space due to a crucial situation.

In recent times, you’ll notice an increasing number of blue pull stations labeled “POLICE” for scenarios involving active shorts or other emergency threats, or green pull stations labeled “MEDICAL.” This specialized labeling ensures clean and immediate communication, allowing for swift response in critical situations.

In conclusion, understanding the roles and functionalities of fire alarm pull stations, blue and green emergency pull stations is vital in ensuring the safety and security of any protected premises.  These devices, each with its unique purpose, play integral roles in safeguarding occupants during emergencies, and their correct usage is paramount in maintaining a secure environment.
